HOW DOES SOMEONE LIKE ME GET SAVED?
Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men,
whereby we must be saved. Acts 4:12
What Does it REALLY take for a person to be SAVED?
Experience has shown that it certainly is not a mere repeating after someone something that they call a "sinner's prayer".
The simple, to-the-point prayer of the sinner in Luke 18:13 was not motivated by any such outside influence. To the contrary. It was motivated by an internal influence: by a deep soul-rending inner remorse and need as he pounded his chest and cried out from his heart to his God for mercy.
Go in your Bible to Luke 18:9-14 and with your heart look into the soul of this sinner. Try to see, as Jesus did, the agony and yearning that was expressed in that man's plea, "God, be merciful to me a sinner!". As I remember, that was the cry in my heart (and probably in yours, too, if so be it that you have also been saved by our God of love and mercy).
People do not get saved by abracadabra's and hocus-pocuses. The issues of life come from out of the heart. The path to salvation begins with an inner awakening to a deep godly sorrow and repentance toward God.
The path that leads us home to our loving heavenly Father is paved with the living Word of God. Those who travel that divine path to receive the salvation rebirth in Christ Jesus are those who believe that God is, and that He is a rewarder of them that DILIGENTLY seek Him in the Spirit, life, and light of His holy Word.
You can read about this kind of diligence in Jeremiah 29:11-13 == for I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will harken unto you. And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.
God is a Spirit. Your journey to Him is a spiritual journey. The "Way" to the Father is a spiritual path. Just as our Father is a Spirit, so also our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is a Spirit. Jesus tells us in John 14:6, "I am the "WAY", the TRUTH, and the LIFE: no man cometh to the Father, but by me." So then, we find that the only WAY to everlasting life with the Father is through our spiritual Savior, Jesus Christ. And the Bible tells us (Revelation 19:13) that He is The Word of God. The Bible also tells us (1 Peter 1:23) that we are born again by the word of God, which liveth and abideth forever.
We know that Jesus Christ is the way and the truth through which we receive life. He is that path home to our Father -- the path that is paved with The Word of God and overflowing with everlasting life for us. The truth that He is The Word of God is clearly revealed to us in these passages of scripture: John 1:1-4, John 1:14, John 17:13-26, Revelation 19:13, Mark 1:8, and 1 Corinthians 12:13 (and in other passages also). Jesus Christ (a divine Spiritual being and Son of God) is The Word of God who was made flesh and dwelt among us; and now baptizes us with the Holy Ghost into His salvation.
Think about these things. Ponder them in your heart. It helps to understand these spiritual truths if you are sincere about wanting to know how people really get saved.
Perhaps the most important passage of all for understanding the actuating power by which our salvation rebirth takes place is 1Peter 1:23-25. We are born-again by The Word of God that liveth and abideth for ever. And this is the Word (Jesus Christ) which by the gospel is preached unto us.
Listen to the gospel preached, believe, study the New Testament, and diligently SEEK.

BIBLE PASSAGES THAT POINT THE WAY TO EVERLASTING LIFE WITH GOD
And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. (Luke 11:9)
For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost. (Luke 19:10)
For by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God. (Ephesians 2:8)
But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. ( Hebrews 11:6)
So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. (Romans 10:17)
But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. (Romans 10:8-10)
He that hath my commandments (love God, love thy neighbor, love one another), and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me (Jesus): and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and manifest myself to him. (John 14:21)
Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. (John 14:23)
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation: but is passed from death unto life. (John 5:24)
